Commercial Floor Drain Camera Inspection

A Westfield clinic had a sewer smell in its restrooms for years, even though the floor drains still drained. Shawn ran a camera through both floor drains in each restroom and recorded the video so the owner could see exactly what was going on.

The problem

A sewer smell in the restrooms that had been there for years. The floor drains still worked, so nobody could see a clog, but the odor never went away.

What the camera found

A belly in the line: a low spot where the pipe has settled. Buildup and sludge were sitting in it. Water still gets past, which is why the drains kept working, but the waste that stays behind is what was causing the smell.

Why a camera inspection

A smell with no clog is hard to pin down by guessing. The camera shows exactly where the problem is and what it is, and the recorded video gives the owner something to see for themselves. From there, the options are cleaning the line out, for example with hydro jetting, or repairing the sagging section so it can’t collect waste again.

Sewer smell, but the drains work fine?

  • A dried-out floor drain trap. Pouring water in once a month keeps the seal.
  • A belly in the line holding waste, like this job.
  • A cracked, loose or blocked vent pipe.
  • A failed wax seal under a toilet.
  • If it keeps coming back, a camera inspection finds the real cause.
